On the non-Boltzmannian nature of quasi-stationary states in long-range interacting systems

چکیده
We discuss the non-Boltzmannian nature of quasi-stationary states in the Hamiltonian Mean Field (HMF) model, a paradigmatic model for long-range interacting classical many-body systems. We present a theorem excluding the Boltzmann-Gibbs exponential weight in Gibbs Γ-space of microscopic configurations, and comment a paper recently published by Baldovin and Orlandini (2006). On the basis of the points here discussed, the ongoing debate on the possible application, within appropriate limits, of the generalized q-statistics to long-range Hamiltonian systems remains open.

Quasi-stationary states and incomplete violent relaxation in systems with long-range interactions
We discuss the nature of quasi-stationary states (QSS) with non-Boltzmannian distribution in systems with long-range interactions in relation with a process of incomplete violent relaxation based on the Vlasov equation. We discuss several attempts to characterize these QSS and explain why their prediction is difficult in general.

We give a closer look at the Central Limit Theorem (CLT) behavior in quasistationary states of the Hamiltonian Mean Field model, a paradigmatic one for long-range-interacting classical many-body systems. We present new calculations which show that, following their time evolution, we can observe and classify three kinds of long-standing quasi-stationary states (QSS) with different correlations. ...
متن کاملDynamics and thermodynamics of systems with long-range interactions: interpretation of the different functionals
We discuss the dynamics and thermodynamics of systems with weak long-range interactions. Generically, these systems experience a violent collisionless relaxation in the Vlasov regime leading to a (usually) non-Boltzmannian quasi stationary state (QSS), followed by a slow collisional relaxation leading to the Boltzmann statistical equilibrium state. These two regimes can be explained by a kineti...
متن کاملKinetic theory for non-equilibrium stationary states in long-range interacting systems
We study long-range interacting systems perturbed by external stochastic forces. Unlike the case of short-range systems, where stochastic forces usually act locally on each particle, here we consider perturbations by external stochastic fields. The system reaches stationary states where external forces balance dissipation on average. These states do not respect detailed balance and support non-...

We show an interesting connection between non-standard (non Boltzmannian) distribution functions arising in the theory of violent relaxation for collisionless stellar systems (Lynden-Bell 1967) and the notion of superstatistics recently introduced by Beck & Cohen (2003). The common link between these two theories is the emergence of coarse-grained distributions arising out of fine-grained distr...
